MS Diet: Relieving Multiple Sclerosis Naturally

MS – Supplements, Nutrients and Vitamins That Can Help

Although MS is considered to be a chronic and debilitating disease there are many natural supplements that can be used to treat the symptoms and slow the progress of this condition. You should find out more information about how to incorporate these helpful dietary supplements, anti-oxidants and vitamins into your own diet.

Multiple Sclerosis or MS is a severe disease that affects a person’s central nervous system. As the condition advances forward it causes progressive scarring and inflammation along the spinal column, optic nerves and even damages other structures that are located deep within the brain.

The destruction from this degenerative disease destroys the myelin sheaths that serve as insulators for nerve fibers. The sheaths contain fatty compounds that protect the nerves and enable them to transmit impulses in the proper manner.

MS affects the natural immunity system and this autoimmune disturbance results in a person developing antibodies, which will target and damage those protective nerve coverings. When the myelin sheaths become damaged the nerve communication is disrupted or halted altogether.

Many studies now show that it is possible to use natural supplements and vitamins to help treat the symptoms of MS. Using the right dietary supplements can help you restore your immunity system. Several of these supplements are listed below. Even if MS is not a condition that you are dealing with, the information is valuable to anyone seeking to improve his or her overall health.

As a person with MS I am always looking to learn more about potential products outside of just the traditional pharmaceuticals, which are used to help alleviate my personal condition. I’ve always believed that your best advocate is yourself. Knowledge is power and taking action be it through diet, supplements, or drugs, will improve the quality of your life.

The supplements that I personally use to help manage my disease are listed and briefly discussed below. Note, I am not a physician nor am I in anyway proposing that these supplements represent a cure. There is no panacea for this disease. However the body of evidence would indicate that using these supplements will not hurt and should in fact help. The great thing is that these supplements can be found in most local market or can be purchased online.

As I briefly discuss the supplements you will notice I’ve chosen not to cover dosing. I really just want to provide a brief insight into the products that I use. As I said knowledge is power but I recommend that you do your own due diligence on these supplements. You’ll learn a lot more about them and have a better level of confidence regarding these products if you do your own in depth analysis.

In no particular order here they are…

Alpha-Lipoic Acid
This is a natural supplement that is proving to be very helpful at reducing inflammation in the body. Studies show that Alpha-Lipoic acid has strong anti-oxidant powers and can help restore normal functions to body cells.

B12 and Related B Vitamins

Methylcobalamin is also known as Vitamin B12 and this supplement is thought to be beneficial when it comes to reducing the symptoms that are associated with an MS flare-up. The B complex vitamins contribute to healthy myelin formation, normal bone marrow production and a strong nervous system.
Other forms of B vitamins that are helpful for treating MS symptoms includeB6, B3, B1, B5 and B2. Folic acid is also a natural compound that can help improve and maintain the overall health of an individual.

Turmeric and Ginger

A simple Indian spice known as Turmeric is highly recommended for use by anyone suffering from debilitating inflammatory processes. The use of both ginger and turmeric may be helpful for treating the inflammation of the myelin sheaths that is noted in patients who are diagnosed with MS. Immunologists are now suggesting that adding turmeric to the diet could have positive, long-term effects for anyone who has Multiple Sclerosis.

Superior Power of Ashwagandha

One of the super herbs now being recommended to MS patients is Ashwagandha. This is also known as Indian Ginseng and it is a very pungent herb that is proving to be useful when someone has an auto-immune disorder such as MS. This botanical compound is available in capsules, powders and pills and it can fight stress, boost the natural immune system and even provide users with more energy.

Vitamin D3, Magnesium and Calcium

Vitamin D3 can be very helpful for anyone with MS as well as for those who have other autoimmune diseases. It has been shown to impede the progressive nature of MS and Vitamin D3 seems to be able to reduce the number of relapses. Combining the Vitamin D with Calcium and Magnesium appears to enhance the positive benefits.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 fatty acids are found in high concentrations in flax seed oil and in oily fish products. Taking EPA and DHA fish oil supplements will help lower the inflammation in your body. These fatty acids will also help maintain your nervous system functions and can help boost the production of the myelin in your body. An alternative to fish oil is Krill Oil. Krill, akin to shrimp are a tiny crustacean that purports to have more bio-available Omega 3 than fish oil. I prefer it to fish oil because you don’t get the fishy after taste. Also it is believed to be helpful in balancing/lowering cholesterol.

Anti- Oxidants- Vitamin E, Vitamin A and the Super Anti-Oxidant Astaxanthin

Chronic inflammation is now being pointed out as a causative factor for many health woes including MS. This is why anti-oxidants and other vitamins can be very helpful. Anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E and Vitamin A can alleviate much of the cellular damage caused by oxidation processes.

One of the Super-Antioxidants is a supplement known as Astaxanthin. This is a natural antioxidant that is said to possess 500 times the strength and power of Vitamin E. You will find this fat soluble compound in wild salmon. It also comes in a gel capsule form that is far less expensive than wild salmon. This Super Antioxidant was recently featured on Dr. Oz. For me it is a definite must have.

With powerful antioxidants you can help repair the mitochondria and DNA structures within the individual body cells. These beneficial compounds are able to reduce inflammatory processes and protect the brain, nervous tracts, myelin sheaths and blood vessels.

My Journey

While searching for something that would address my physical and cognitive issues, I found the book, I found the book, How to Reverse MS Now! The book takes an all natural holistic approach to treating Multiple sclerosis. It’s definitely worth your consideration if you are truly interested in regaining control of your life instead of the disease or Big Pharma controlling it for you.

I am not a physician  nor am I involved in the medical field.  What I’ve presented is learning that I’ve acquired that has helped me in controlling my symptoms of MS. Before undertaking any diet or change in your fitness regime, it is advised that you seek counsel  your physician.
